Astrology Myths Debunked

Myth #1: “Astrology isn't scientific or fact-based.”

While astrology is often criticized for not being scientific or fact-based, it's important to understand that astrology, while not a branch of science, does include scientific aspects. Vedic astrology is considered a spiritual science because it is based on astronomy, mathematics, and spirituality all in one. It involves the observation and meticulous calculation of celestial bodies. It’s based on the positions of planets, stars, and other celestial phenomena, which are calculated using precise astronomical data and mathematical formulas. While the interpretation of these influences may be seen as more of a philosophy than science, the foundational calculations and celestial observations are undeniably rooted in scientific principles.

Myth #2: “Astrology is only meant for fun and entertainment.”

Astrology is often dismissed as mere amusement or entertainment, but it holds significance beyond just casual enjoyment. While it can certainly be enjoyable to read horoscopes or explore astrological compatibility with friends, astrology has a deeper purpose. It offers a framework for understanding the complexities of human nature, relationships, and life's patterns. Many people use astrology as a tool for self-reflection, personal growth, and decision-making. So, while astrology can certainly be enjoyed recreationally, it holds a more profound role in helping people navigate their lives with greater awareness and meaning.

Myth #3: “Astrology is a form of witchcraft.”

Debunking the myth that astrology is a form of witchcraft is essential to differentiate the two and avoid perpetuating stereotypes and misconceptions. Astrology analyzes and interprets the correlation between the cosmos and life on Earth, while witchcraft refers to practices associated with magic, spell-casting, and rituals believed to harness supernatural forces. Astrology does not involve the practices and elements typically associated with witchcraft. Although some people who practice witchcraft also practice astrology, the two are not synonymous.

Myth #4: “Big 3 are the most important part of a birth chart.”

The "Big 3" in astrology—your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs—are often highlighted as the most significant components of your birth chart. However, this emphasis can be misleading. Each planet's position, the aspects they form with one another, and the houses they inhabit all play vital roles in shaping the nuances of your character and life experiences. Each planet symbolizes different aspects of an individual's personality, experiences, and life events with equal importance. The interplay between different planets, their aspects, and the houses they occupy provides the most comprehensive understanding of a birth chart. Therefore, while the Sun, Moon, and Rising signs are essential, they should be considered alongside the entire birth chart for the most accurate and holistic interpretation.

Myth #5: “You can be born on a cusp.”

In astrology, a cusp refers to the dividing line or dates between two adjacent zodiac signs. Many people believe that being born on a cusp means possessing qualities of both signs. For example, in Vedic astrology according to the Lahiri Ayanamsa, the sign Aries begins on April 14th and ends on May 15th. Therefore, many might believe that having a May 15th birthday means being born on a cusp and exhibiting qualities of both Aries and Taurus. However, this is a misconception. It’s important to remember that astrology operates on precise degrees and positions of cosmic bodies at the time of one’s birth. In astrology, a planet is always in one specific sign at any given moment. Astrologers emphasize the significance of the exact birth time to determine the precise position of the Sun (and all other planets) accurately. While the idea of cusps can feel intuitive and appealing, the precise nature of astrology means that each planet, including the Sun, will always be firmly situated in a specific sign at the time of birth.
